JOB: Public Library Princeton, Humanities Program Fellow, Two-Year Position.
Established in 1909, the Princeton Public Library serves 30,000 residents in Princeton, NJ. The library’s dynamic service program includes a great collection of print and digital content, more than 1,600 programs attracting more than 70,000 attendees, each year, and a variety of opportunities for community engagement with more than 850,000 annual visitors.
The Princeton Public Library is widely recognized for excellence and is regarded as a model for other public libraries. The library’s $5.4million annual budget is funded through a combination of public and private funds.
In order to expand the humanities programs and contributions of PPL, we’ve created a new position – the Humanities Program Fellow. We seek a highly qualified candidate to be the inaugural humanities program fellow.
The Humanities Program Fellow will be responsible for the overall administration and implementation of the library’s efforts to promote the humanities as an essential part of contemporary life.
Building on the library’s preeminent role as a welcoming intellectual space that functions as our town’s public square, the Humanities Program Fellow will develop ideas, identify subjects and speakers for events, and create new opportunities for public engagement using the practices of the humanities to frame conversations.
The Humanities Program Fellow will report to the Public Programming Librarian and work closely with the Program Team, and Marketing Director on translating contemporary issues and big ideas into live events with broad public impact.
The Fellow will be encouraged to develop her/his own program expertise in public humanities and, in consultation with PPL staff, work focus may be adjusted to make best use of the Fellow’s particular skills and interests.
The most competitive candidate will have demonstrated academic and personal experience, including:
* A masters degree in Library Science (with an undergraduate degree in the humanities) preferred
* A masters or doctoral degree in a humanities discipline or ABDs interested in a career launching position in the public humanities
* Excellent judgment, the ability to learn quickly, a track record of responsibility and accountability and a commitment to improving personal performance
* Understanding of and enthusiasm for public humanities
* * Outstanding project management skills, including budgets, deadlines, and collaboration
* Experience working in a team environment
* Evidence of outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication including confidence and enjoyment with public speaking
* Flexibility, energy, and enthusiasm to address an array of humanities issues and diverse constituencies
* Experience with using social media and the internet along with traditional print media to effectively communicate and reach new audiences
* Program experience
* Experience with measuring program success.
This is a two-year position beginning on or about July 2015 and continuing for 24 months. Beginning salary is $50,765 per year, negotiable depending upon experience. PPL offers an exceptional work environment and attractive benefits.
